Information Society

Information Society

An agreeable dance outfit with ties to industrial music, techno, and funk plus an equally appreciable pop sense, Information Society hit the dance clubs and later the charts with their infectious breakout single, 1988’s “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy). “The group, a quartet formed in Minneapolis by James Cassidy, Paul Robb, Kurt Harland (aka Kurt Valaquen), and Amanda Kramer, signed to Tommy Boy Records a few years later and recorded a self-titled debut album. The single “What’s on Your Mind (Pure Energy),” propelled by a Leonard Nimoy sample and Valaquen’s smooth, assured vocals, became a club hit and eventually landed at number three in the pop charts. Later that year, “Walking Away” hit the Top Ten as well, and the album reached gold-certified status. Kramer left soon after, however, to record with the Golden Palominos, 10,000 Maniacs, and also on her own. Information Society’s sophomore album, similar to not-so-famous follow-ups by dance-popsters EMF and Jesus Jones, was more than competent but mostly ignored by critics who had pegged them as one-hit wonders. Several singles managed shallow chart exposure, but after the third album (1994’s Peace & Love, Inc.), both Robb and Cassidy exited. Harland continued on, releasing the industrial-tinged Don’t Be Afraid for Cleopatra Records in 1997.

From The Today Show on NBC, ABC’s Good Morning America, NY Times, and Billboard Magazine… Lucas Prata’s duet with Dan Balan of O-Zone “Ma Ya Hee-Dragostea din Tei” (The Numa Numa Song) has been keeping the Ultra Records franchise busy. “Ma Ya Hee” originally recorded and produced by Dan Balan of O-Zone has been #1 in 27 countries and has sold over 8 million singles throughout the world in various languages. Not having impacted the United States with the foreign language versions, it was logical for Ultra Records to team up Lucas Prata with Dan Balan to re-record a translated English version of the song. Prata has been making personal live appearances as well as live on Air performance in support of his release of his version to CHR/POP Radio stations & TV affiliates in Canada, Chicago IL, Orlando FL, Tulsa OK, Providence RI, Washington DC, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. As he travels to these markets on his days off from recording his long awaited album, he is preparing for the launch of his fourth single “And She Said…” (Co-written and produced by Valentin). “And She Said…” will be different from the past three singles I have put out” says Prata. “This single will show growth in my writing as we focus on Rhythm/Top 40 radio as well as Hurban Stations across the country”. Lumidee

Lumidee

R&B’s Lumidee (born Lumidee Cedeño) began singing and rapping at the age of 12, and was 19 years old when her recordings first hit the streets. After graduation, the Spanish Harlem native hooked up with producer DJ Ted Smooth to record the single “Never Leave You (Uh-Oooh)” for his independent Straight Face label. Lumidee claimed that her singing sounded off-key on the song because DJ Tedsmooth presented her with a different backing track than the reggae-based Diwali rhythm he later added. Regardless, the song proved infectious and won “Hottest Song” on New York’s Hot 97, causing major labels to line up with offers. Universal won, and released her full-length debut, Almost Famous, in 2003. ~ In 2007 she’s scored with another big hit — She’s Like The Wind — featuring Tony Sunshine

Amber

Amber

AMBER ’s track record of club and pop hits such as “This is Your Night,” “Above the Clouds,” “If You Could Read My Mind” (the hit from the “ Studio 54” film soundtrack with Ultra Nate and Jocelyn Enriquez,) “Sexual (Li Da Di),” “Yes” and “Need to Be Naked,” defined her as a dance diva with a flair for the mainstream. AMBER also made her big screen debut in the much talked about film Studio 54, performing the song as part of the trio. Her talents as a singer and songwriter have been celebrated and complimented with seven consecutive #1 Dance singles. Her songs have been covered and have produced hits for other artists, including most recently, Cher’s recording of AMBER’s “Love One Another” on her latest album AMBER’s rendition of the Diane Warren penned “Taste the Tears” landed on the first music compilation from television’s “Sex and the City.” After seeing her perform, David Gest invited her to join the impressive list of artists performing at his recent wedding to Liza Minnelli. AMBER has recently begun recording her fourth album, and she has a few surprises in store. This will be her first album released on her own recording label. Amber says, “I have decided to found my own label and I am excited about the artistic freedom it will give me.” Fans can also expect a darker sound and feel. Themes will be about love, on society observations, and personal hardships. “It will contain more live instruments and a matured sound…I like growth and risk-it’s just in my nature!” AMBER ’s third and current studio album, NAKED, (Tommy Boy) showcases her personal and artistic growth. “With this album I feel I can really breathe as a songwriter, as a vocalist, as a creative person,” she says. Setting out to explore the layers beneath the surface reflects the artist and songwriter’s life and lifestyle. AMBER has writing credit on all but two of the album’s 14 songs and she transverses lyrical territory from God, to James Joyce, to her young son. This is a new AMBER, a stronger-than-ever AMBER. Since her last album, AMBER, was released three years ago, the singer bought back her contract from the Berman Brothers, the producers of her first two studio efforts and instead worked with a cadre of talented producers–of her own choice. “With the other producers, I didn’t feel I had the creative freedom I was supposed to have,” explains the singer. “I was directed in terms of how to write my songs. I didn’t feel comfortable in that skin.” And, her high music standards are deep rooted. Music was always in her life — growing up with a Mother who is a piano teacher and songwriter and a Father who is an Opera Singer, the Dutch born artist grew up in a home where she says, “Music was just another language we used to talk to each other.” It is easy to see where the musical variety on her music is derived from, a dance diva with classical training, quoting literature on a hit single! “Yes!” the first single from NAKED, is probably the first dance song to take classic literature as its sole inspiration. Billy Steinberg acquired the permission of the estate of James Joyce to use the text from Ulysses as the hook for the first hit from the album. She sings, “I put my arms around him, yes/and drew him down to me so he could feel my breast/And his heart was going like mad/And yes, I said yes.” AMBER bristles when she recalls that some advised her that the lyrics might be censored at radio. “Those are Joyce’s words! You have all these songs about smoking weed and sex on the radio and there might be controversy because of the word ‘breast?’ What am I missing?” The song topped the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and hit #2 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi Single Sales chart. AMBER is pushing at the boundaries of dance music, daring to redefine her fans’ definition of the genre, and laying herself bare in her provocative lyrics. “I am at a point where I want to say to people, ‘I have a lot to say and I am a serious vocalist, even though people have buried it under their beats in the past. If people like my music, that would be great. If not, at least I did take the leap into the deep end.”

She performed the song live on the Regis & Kelly talk show on ABC, and her debut album This Is Reina was released on October 26. The Spanish translation of Reina, means queen and the name fits. Ive always been a number one fan of Donna Summer, Reina enthuses, and Im honored that she asked me to write a song for her. Reina, knew that her childhood hobby would become her livelihood after performing the Fame ballad, Out Here On My Own in a high school production of Hooray For Hollywood. She recalls afterward this girl in tears walked up to me backstage and said you changed my life tonight. She told me that shed been considering suicide and that she connected to something in my performance. It blew my mind, and from that moment, I knew I had to do this professionally and use it as a means of promoting positive messages. Kim Sozzi

Kim Sozzi

Kim Sozzi’s self-titled debut album is a sexy electronic pop album that showcases her extensive vocal range and lyrical creativity. Having worked with top-name musicians and having her songs used in various mainstream entertainment projects, Kim chose to sign with Berman Brothers’ label BAB Music when the labels came knocking. Growing up in musical surroundings, it’s no wonder that Kim developed the desire to perform at an early age. “My grandmother was opera singer, my grandfather is a Latin percussion player and my dad is a piano player and bandleader. So I guess you could say my childhood was anything but conventional.” During her teens, Kim sang with a number of groups in genres ranging from jazz, musical theatre, and the church choir. It wasn’t until she moved from her hometown of Melville, Long Island to New York City that she really began to focus on a full-time career in singing. Armed with voice lessons, weekly club gigs, family support and determined perseverance, Kim gradually began to write her own songs as her skills in pop music developed. “I write from the heart, usually about situations that have touched and affected my life and changed me as a person. These are songs that people across the world, of all ages and ethnicities, can relate to. I know that if I have felt a certain way, there are many others out there who have experienced the same feelings. It’s nice to know that your emotions are understood.” It wasn’t long before Kim’s sexy, vulnerable voice, energetic persona and hard work began to pay off. Her first bi break came when one of her songs, “Letting Go”, was used on and episode of the popular television show “ Dawson’s Creek” and added to its soundtrack. An appearance on the Teaching Mrs. Tingle motion picture soundtrack with the lead single “Till I Cry You Out of Me” quickly followed.

Fat Joe

Fat Joe

“I am a warrior. I am tough. I fight through all adversity. The great ones fought through adversity. I can name about 400 groups that came and went, even more, through the time of my struggle in hip-hop. Everybody counts me out every couple of years and I come back better than ever, bigger than ever.” -Fat Joe Born on August 19th, 1972 in the Bronx, New York City, Joseph Cartagena, a.k.a. Fat Joe, was heavily influenced by the Zulu Nation culture and parties as a youth. His brother, Angel, would bring home tapes of the music played at these events, and the original sounds piqued the interest of young Joe. As he got older, he too became involved in the whole hip-hop culture, taking a liking to not only rap, but graffiti art and break dancing as well. The streets of South Bronx would continue to have a profound impact on Joe. Belonging to a “crew” of toughs, he took the name Joey Crack, which reflected his growing control and influence on the drug trade in his little corner of the world. It took some time, but Joe realized his real future lay in music, not narcotics. He then used his long-standing street credibility and talent as a rapper to get a music deal with Relativity Records. Under them, Joe became Fat Joe Da Gangsta and released his debut album, Represent, in 1993. To the surprise of many, this small-time Spanish rapper scored a No. 1 hit with the track “Flow Joe.” He became a sensation in the New York hip-hop scene and continued to ride the wave two years later when he came out with Jealous One’s Envy. Fat Joe caught the eye of fans across America for rapping from a true “gangster’s” perspective, about the harsh realities of the world he grew up in. With the golden touch of producer DJ Premier, the album caught the eye of many a fan and fellow rapper. Fat Joe collaborated, and consequently got more exposure, with the likes of L.L. Cool J and Raekwon soon after. This growth in popularity led Fat Joe to seek a bigger target market, and he was able to land a deal with Big Beat/Atlantic Records. In 1998, the album Don Cartagena became his best effort yet — a socially conscious album that reflected, among other things, the profound influence a meeting with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan had on him. With its success, Atlantic put newcomers Big Pun and the crew the Terror Squad under Fat Joe’s wing. Both artists made huge steps under the guidance of Joe, including smash hits like “Feelin’ So Good” alongsideJennifer Lopez. In a short time, Joe, Pun and the rest of the Squad had several Billboard hits and established a name for themselves in the rap industry. All the celebrating came to a halt, however, in February 2000, when Big Pun suffered a fatal heart attack. The 600-pound rapper was Fat Joe’s best friend and the loss, coupled with a sister stuck in a coma, hit him very hard. With nowhere to concentrate his energies, he turned toward music once again. 2001’s Jealous One’s Still Envy (J.O.S.E.) became a platinum-selling album, and featured the most played single in Atlantic Record’s history: “What’s Luv,” performed alongside R&B’s new queen, Ashanti. The rest of the album was replete with rap all-stars, including Busta Rhymes and Ludacris. To ride the wave of hits, Joe worked quickly to release his fifth album, Loyalty, in 2002. It showed an honest, original and creative side, including one of rap’s first real love songs, dedicated to Joe’s wife. When not touring or promoting his latest album, Fat Joe connects with the community in the Bronx. He owns a barbershop, a clothing store called Fat Joe’s Halftime, and runs a fashion line, FJ560. He employs his friends form the ‘hood and keeps them on track, by helping them earn honest livings. In all aspects of life, Fat Joe has proven to be an originator and a rising star.

Lisette Melendez

Lisette Melendez

Lisette Melendez grew up in East Harlem where she still resides, and where she began to take an interest in singing at the age of 12. Both her mother and her aunt sang in church and in community theaters, inspiring Lisette to take a chance. Growing up with four other siblings in the “barrio”, Lisette set herself apart from the dangers of inner city life. As a child, Lisette spent most of her time at home listening to cassettes and working on her singing skills. Eager to become a singer, Lisette marveled at the rise of another young Puerto Rican diva named “LISA LISA”, and figured, “If she can do it, why can’t I?” With this attitude in mind, Lisette formed a boy/girl group while she was still in high school. This group later led her to producer CARLOS BERRIOS, whose credits includes such divas as SWEET SENSATION and SAMANTHA FOX. Soon thereafter, she was doing background vocals for Berrios and eventually provided the lead voice for the 1988 club hit “NOISE.” Lisette went on to work with FEVER RECORDS’ executives SAL ABBATIELLO after the release of Lisette’s smash hit, “TOGETHER FOREVER.” Later that same year, Lisette was signed with FEVER RECORDS and her debut album “A DAY IN MY LIFE” was released. In 1993, Lisette released her second album with FEVER/COLUMBIA entitled “TRUE TO LIFE.” In 1994, “TRUE TO LIFE” reached double platinum status in Japan, where she also won a Grammy for “Best New Artist” for that same year. Lisette has gone on to release yet another album, which features back up vocals from fellow divas, JOEI MAE & SAFIRE entitled “IMAGINATION.” She has also branched out to do Spanish/Salsa music and has released “UN POCO DE MI” under SIR GEORGE RECORDS.
